Mental Health Advocacy Services
Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. (MHAS) is a private, non-profit organization established in 1977 to provide free legal services to people with mental disabilities. MHAS assists both children and adults, with an emphasis on obtaining government benefits and services, protecting rights, and fighting discrimination. MHAS also serves as a resource to the community by providing training and technical assistance to attorneys, mental health professionals, consumer and family member groups, and other advocates. In addition, MHAS participates in impact litigation in an effort to improve the lives of people with mental disabilities. Its projects include:
- Special Education Outreach Project
- Fair Housing Advocacy Project
- Government Benefits Advocacy/Access to Mental Health Services Project
- Behavioral Health Legal Partnership for Veterans (BeHeLP-Vets)
- Impact Litigation
The mission of Mental Health Advocacy Services is to protect and advance the legal rights of children and adults with mental disabilities, in order to maximize autonomy, promote equality, and secure the resources needed to thrive in the community.

November 21 Meeting
Please join NAMI South Bay for its November monthly meeting tonight. The speaker for this meeting will be from Mental Health Advocacy Services a nonprofit organization protecting and advancing the legal rights of people with mental disabilities obtaining government benefits and services such as SSI, housing, mental health parity and others. The speaker will tell us about their services and provide a special report on their involvement in the study “Failing Grade:How California’s School Districts Have Abandoned Children with Disabilities”

10月17日の月例会は新しい方1名を含め9名の参加者とアドバイザーの荒井さんが来てくださいました。
今年もNAMI Walks Los Angelesが無事に終了致しました。参加者は約5、000人でファンドレーズ合計は、約$420,000でした。寄付はまだ12月1日まであつめております。この年一度の大きなイベントであるNAMIWalksの様子はチャンネル5で放映されました。

私の息子がサンディエゴからロングビーチに今年の1月に移ってきてから、私自身もとても忙しくなりました。L.A.カウンティーのメンタルヘルスセンターであるAPI Long Beachのクライアントになっていますが、ソーシャルワーカーが積極的に息子をサポートしてくれずにフラストレーションが溜まります。このような場合は、上司であるスーパーバイザーに相談されてもいいと思います。私は上司の方に相談して、何度もソーシャルウォーカーに電話して、やっと最近はソーシャルワーカーが息子に電話したり、迎えに行ったりしてくれるようになりました。

今回のミニ講座は、当日に荒井さんからのご要望で、テーマをかえて、ホームレスの為の公的サービスについて話していただきました。公的サービスに関しては、Department of Public Social Serviceで調べてください。 今ロサンゼルスではホームレスに対する予算が充分に出ているので、住む場所も提供してくれるそうです。〝たとえホームレスになったとしてもどうにかなりますよ”とおっしゃっていました。
どうぞこの1ヵ月も私達の大切な当事者との間に、少しでも信頼関係が出来たら素晴らしいなと思っています。

Understanding Art Therapy and Its Value in Recovery
Metropolitan State Hospital Community Education Program is inviting families and friends to a video review and discussion regarding “Understanding Art Therapy and Its Value in Recovery.”
Presenter: Nina Matthews, MA , MFA, ATR
Ms. Matthews will cover an introduction to Art therapy and its treatment relevance in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy unit treating patients with Borderline Personality Disorder. There will be a case presentation of a patient with BPD and will include a slide show of the artwork generated from individual Art therapy sessions. Participants will also be given an option to engage in an interactive creative process to experience the validity and utility of the Art therapy process.

10月1日(土)のNAMIWalksは青空の下、メンバー,当事者、 サポートしてくれている友人達と5kを歩く事ができました。 又メンバーを含めたくさんの方達からNAMIの活動とNAMI Japanese Groupの為のドネーションをして頂きました。合計で$2,200を日本人グループから寄付する事ができました。還元される資金は、当事者や家族の為のサービスに使われます。皆様の暖かいご支援を心から感謝いたします。

Our JSSG group walked 5 km with peer people, family, friends and supporter total 15 people around Grand Park, Down Town Los Angeles. It was nice beautiful flue sky day.
Our group could donate $2,200 to NAMIWalks. Thank you for all your kind and generous thoughts to our group and Mental Health issued people. These donation use for mostly educational program for peer people and family and also various peer group activities and programs.

Los Angeles Mental Health Court Has Moved
Effective Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, due to structural damage to the Mental Health Courthouse, the courthouse, located at 1150 N. San Fernando Rd., Los Angeles, is closed until further notice. All courthouse operations, including hearings, have been temporarily relocated to:

Calendars are relocated as follows:
