General Meeting, February 24, with Dr. Mary Read

Dr. Mary Read, M.D., Director of the Adult Outpatient Program, Harbor UCLA Medical Center, will speak at our monthly meeting on Monday, February 24, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall at First Lutheran Church, 2900 Carson Street, Torrance, California. Dr. Read’s topic will be  “What A  Psychiatrist  Would Like Families To Know.” This presentation will be very helpful to family members and caregivers as they interact with psychiatrist. Family members, caregivers and persons with a mental illness will be able to ask questions of Dr. Read at the meeting.

Before the meeting, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Fireside Room at First Lutheran Church, will be the Caring & Sharing Support Group for family members and caregivers only. If the group becomes too large, a second group will meet in Fellowship Hall. If you wish to participate, please be on time.

January Meeting and Speaker

This month’s speaker is Maria Salas, Mental Health Coordinator at San Pedro Mental Health Center. Maria will speak about the programs and services available at the San Pedro Mental Health Center (150 W 7th St., San Pedro), and the other centers in the South Bay.

San Pedro Mental Health Services offers outpatient or partial hospitalization care for patients ages 18 and over. Their areas of expertise include adults with serious mental illness, persons with mental and substance abuse disorders, persons with post-traumatic stress disorder, veterans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender clients, and forensic clients. When looking for a mental health center consider what treatment and patient types they focus on and choose one that best fits your needs.

This month’s meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Torrance on Monday, January 27th. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., before the meeting, will be the Caring & Sharing support group.

Please note that this meeting will not be on the usual third Monday (January 20) of the month, because January 20 is Martin Luther King Day. Instead, the meeting is on the fourth Monday, January 27,2014. (The February meeting will also be on the fourth Monday because of Presidents Day/Washington’s Birthday.)

NAMI South Bay Holiday Pot Luck Dinner

Please join us for our Annual Holiday Pot Luck Dinner. Bring your favorite dish to share with 10-12 people; it doesn’t matter what you bring it always works out somehow. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit with other NAMI members and make new friends. There will be music and our White Elephant gift table (bring any items you might want to donate).

We will also be honoring our NAMI volunteers.

NAMI South Bay General Meeting Tonight

NAMI South Bay’s monthly meeting takes place tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Lutheran Church on Carson Street in Torrance. This month, Tysun Roberts tells his story of incredible courage and determination. You won’t want to miss this story of recovery and hope.

Before the meeting, a Caring and Sharing Support Group for family members and caregivers only will meet at 6:00 PM in the Fireside Room.  If the group becomes too large a second group will meet in Fellowship Hall.

Earl Parham is President of Insurportal. In this role, he provides overall leadership for the health, life and retirement brokerage company. Mr. Parham has 10 years of industry experience as a licensed health and life agent. Also, he is founder of Insurportalblog which is a research and news source for financial services. His vision is to empower the consumer to be able to make better insurance decisions. Insurportal follows one simple rule: Always act solely in the best interest of the client.

He is a board member with the GRYD Foundation. The GRYD foundation is an independent, 501C3 nonprofit corporation that collaborates with the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development to reduce incidences of violent crime in Los Angeles, build strong communities and help sister cities to develop effective violence reduction strategies.

Mr. Parham graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BA in Urban Planning. He worked for the Los Angeles Urban as a Manager of Business Services before starting his company.

Annual Picnic August 18 at Wilderness Park

NAMI South Bay’s Annual Picnic will be held Sunday, August 18, 2013, at Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Bring the entire family and a dish to share. Hamburgers and Hot Dogs will be provided. This is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon with NAMI South Bay friends in a beautiful setting.

Members Please Note: The regular Caring and Sharing Support and Monthly Speaker meeting on the third Monday of the month will not be held this month–we have the Annual Picnic instead. Also, the NAMI California Conference is August 16 and 17. (Next regular monthly meeting will be Monday, September 16.)
