Today marks the start of #MentalIllnessAwarenessWeek, a national week long spotlight on mental illness and the harmful effects of stigma. The theme of this year’s Mental Illness Awareness Week is, “What People with Mental Illness Want You to Know.” See information below and at NAMI.org/MIAW.
This #MIAW, we are asking YOU to help us meet the exponential growth in need for our services. Whether you’ve benefited from our classes, found community in our support groups, attended our free conferences, or rallied for mental health justice with us at NAMI Walks, you know how important our work is. Our team works hard to meet the needs of individuals and families affected by mental illness EVERY DAY. The effects of COVID, systemic racism, and physical isolation have impacted everyone, and more people than ever continue to need our support.
During this year of unprecedented anxiety, depression, and fear, we have continued our work of providing hope and help: transitioned support groups and educational programs for family members and peers to online.Advocated for systemic change at policymaking tables at county, state and national level which you can hear more about at our October 19 meeting.shifted our annual NAMIWalks LA County to May 22, 2021 to focus on the immediate increase in demand for our services.
